Style in Written English

Tugas : Bahasa Inggris Bisnis 2 - Pertemuan 12

1. Question

Terdapat beberapa kalimat tanya dalam bahasa inggris, yaitu : yes/no question information questions, dan embedded questions. Positive yes/no questions.

Contoh :

- Have you finished doing your homework?

- Will you go to watch a movie with me tonight?

2. Sequance of Tenses

Logika yang mengatur tentang tenses, misalnya sebuah kejadian di future tense tidak bisa terjadi di past tense. Dalam writting, sequance of tenses menentukan dimana sebuah kejadian trjadi. Kejadian past tense datang sebelum kejadian present tense, kejadian present tense datang sebelum kejadian future tense, dll.

Contoh :

- "I need to got to the store", maka di jawab she said that she needed to go to the store"

- "If you can meet me at the airport, I would be grateful", maka di jawab "If you could meet me at the airport, I would be grateful"

3. Say/Tell

Say dan Tell memiliki dua arti kata yang berbeda, yaitu berkata dan mengatakan. Dalam tata bahasa inggris (grammar), terutama dlam topik Reported Speech, keduanya mempunyai pola yang berbeda.

Contoh :

- Kevin said that he was tired (Say)

- Kevin told Jane that he was tired (Tell)

4. Antecendents of Pronouns

Kata yang di gantikan oleh pronoun. Kata antecendent artinya "sebelumnya". Hal ini di karenakan pronoun sering menggantikan kata sebelumnya atau kata yang sudah di sebutkan terlebih dahulu.

Contoh :

- When you see the professor, please tell him I'll be ten minutes late (professor menjadi him)

- The man who lives next door lost his driving kicense (man menjadi his)

5. Dungling Constuctions

Dangling adalah sebuah kesalahan dalam struktur kalimat, dimana ada ketidak cocokan antara apa yang di maksud oleh penulis atau pembicara dengan apa yang di maksud oleh pembaca atau pendengar. Kesalahan ini tentu akan menyebabkan kesalahpahaman, maksud yang ingin di sampaikan tidak tersampaikan seutuhnya.

Contoh :

- Having seen blackpool tower, the eiffel tower is more impressive, seharusnya adalah Having seen blackpool tower, she thinks the eiffel tower impressive

- Meticulous and punctual, David's work ethic is admirable, seharusnya adalah Meticulous and puctual, David has an admirable work ethic
