Verb as Complement

1. Complement

Complement adalah kata atau kelompok kata yang melengkapi kata dari subject, verb atau object. Dengan demikian ada tiga macam complement, yaitu : Subject, Verb dan Object Complement.

2. Verb Complement

Verb Complement adalah direct object (DO) atau indirect object (IO) dari suatu action verb. Objek-objek tersebut dapat berupa noun, pronoun atau konstruksi lain yang berakting seperti noun, seperti : gerund, infinitive dan noun clause.

3. Verb + gerunds

Gerund adalah suatu kata yang di bentuk dari verb dengan di tambahkan suffix-ing dan berfungsi sebagai noun. Walaupun berfungsi sebagai noun namun masih bertingkah seperti verb jika berada di dalam frasanya.

Contoh :

- Running may be hard for some people (subject of a sentence)

- I hate waiting (direct object)

- My bestfriend's favourite activity is shopping (subject complement)

- They disscussed an article about telling a truth (object of a preposition)

- His hobby, sailing, takes a lot of time (appositive)

4. Verb + to infinitive

Infinitive adalah kata dasar dari sebuah kata kerja. Misalnya : to run, to play, to sleep, to study, to do, to clean, to grow, to kick, to smoke, to give, to take dan lain sebagainya.

Jenis-jenis infinitive :

a. Infinitive dengan "to" (full infinitive)

Contoh :

- You will have to ask her

- You are to leave immediately

- She has to go to Berlin next week

b. Invinitive tanpa "to" (bare infinitive)

Contoh :

- I would rather visit Rome

- She would rather live in Italy

- Would you rather eat steak oer fish?
